WATT-WATTCHER

I DESIGNED THIS PRODUCT AND SOLD THE PATENT RIGHTS TO MI-TECH ELECTRONICS (TELAR CORP).  IT HAS BEEN ON THE MARKET FOR YEARS AND IS SOLD BY IMS.  MANY GRANULATOR MANUFACTURERS ALSO SELL IT AS A FACTORY INSTALLED OPTION ON THEIR EQUIPMENT.

I AM ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON THE SHOP FLOOR AND THAT IS WHY I INVENTED THE WATT-WATTCHER.

Product:
Watt Wattcher 2000™ Granulator Controller
Item #:
121021
Watt Wattcher 2000™ Granulator Controller Retrofit Kit
List Price:
$795.00 USD
This controller consists of a photoelectric eye and vibration detector. The vibration detector automatically shuts off the granulator motor when it's idling. The photoelectric eye instantly turns it back on when the operator feeds the machine. Use the IMS Watt Wattcher 2000™ Granulator Controller to reduce energy and maintenance costs. By limiting granulator operation, you extend the machine's service life. A simple one-time calibration will ensure that the Watt Wattcher 2000™ is working properly with your machine.
Saves electricity costs
Automatically shuts off unused machine
Automatically starts machine when parts enter feed chutes
Increases life of blades, motor, belts, bearings and screens
Adjustable timer delays shutoff from 20 seconds to 2 minutes
94 dBA warning horn on startup
Watt Wattcher 2000™ is a trademark of Telar Corp. (Mi-Tech Electronics)
Item Details:
Complete with control box, electronic eye, cable and mounting hardware. ($95.00 installation charge on any new IMS granulator). Ask about other control voltages, line voltage relays or longer cables.

Note from PPR- This report is designed to be concise and to the point. It does not contain data you can find elsewhere. This report is the only spot where you can find this information. Everything we state in this report is backed up by data and hours of testing. We believe in quality reports with hard hitting facts as opposed to piles of information with little meaning. The testing conducted for this report took nine hours to complete. You have made a wise choice, which will make your purchasing decisions easier.

Watt-Wattcher Energy Saver
So you are considering the Watt-Watcher for your facility. We found this to be a simple, handy little device. The real question is, does it save money, and if so, what is the payback?  This report will cover the advantages and disadvantages of the Watt-Watcher based on the test results. At the completion of the main body of the report we will present our recommendations. The separate How and What We Test section describes exactly what variables are evaluated. This section also goes on to describe how and why variables are examined. The data itself is presented in a chart format at the conclusion of the report.

Test Results
Companies with this emblem next to their name have earned the Plastics Product Review Seal of Approval based on their upper echelon test results.   THE WATT-WATTCHER EARNED THE SEAL OF APPROVAL

Watt Wattcher
We tested this product as it is intended to be used. This product is not really intended for use on a granulator sitting at the end of a conveyor. After all, you don’t want your granulator turning on and off every ten seconds. Rather, this product is intended for granulators that handle a bulk of material at random intervals throughout the day. Our test simulates this by bulk loading the granulator periodically and analyzing the energy difference with, and without, the Watt-Watcher. Our testing shows a payback period of about 8 months. Not bad, considering the product also offers convenience.

Conclusions
An eight month payback on a simple device that probably won’t break down is a decent return on investment. Just make sure you purchase it for the right type of granulation process. It is only of use in situations where the granulator needs to be turned on and off several times per day.

How and What We Test
What We Test
Energy Consumption- What else is there to measure on an energy saving device?
How We Test
Energy Consumption- We tested the Watt/Wattcher to simulate a specific end use. This product has little use on robot fed applications, so it would be pointless to simulate this type of usage. However, if you have an operator who is feeding sprues and rejected parts into a granulator, the Watt/Wattcher steps in. Testing was conducted by inserting fifteen sprues and runners into the granulator every seven and a half minutes. This is intended to simulate a thirty second cycle. The test was conducted for a total of thirty-seven and a half minutes (five batches). First we ran the granulator with the Watt/Wattcher off and measured the energy consumption. Then the same test was run with the Watt/Wattcher on. The kWh difference was calculated for the 37.5 minute test and converted into a savings per 6000 hour year based on $0.08 per kWh.

Explanation of Watt-Watcher Chart and Data
This chart explains the energy savings of the Watt-Watcher.
Standard Granulator- This is the amount of energy the granulator uses (in kWh per hour) without the Watt-Watcher installed.
With Watt-Watcher- This is the amount of energy the granulator uses (in kWh per hour) with the Watt-Watcher installed.
kWh Difference- The Standard Granulator data subtracted by the With Watt-Watcher data.
Percentage Difference- The kWh Difference as a percentage of the Standard Granulator energy usage.
Approximate Yearly Savings- The savings of the granulator based on the kWh difference multiplied by a 6000 hour work year and a kWh rate of $0.08.
Unit Price- The list price of the Watt-Watcher.
Payback- The payback time based on the Approximate Yearly Savings and the Unit Price.
